Let y=f(x)=e2x−4y = f(x) = e^{2x} - 4. To find f−1f^{- 1}, we write xx in terms of yy and then swap the letters.

y=e2x−4y = e^{2x} - 4
e2x=y+4e^{2x} = y + 4
2x=ln⁡(y+4)2x = \ln(y + 4)
x=12ln⁡(y+4)x = \frac{1}{2}\ln(y + 4)

Interchanging xx and yy,

f−1(x)=12ln⁡(x+4).f^{- 1}(x) = \frac{1}{2}\ln(x + 4).

Note: the domain of f−1f^{- 1} is the range of ff, not all xx for which ln⁡(x+4)\ln(x + 4) is defined by itself.

Since x∈Rx \in \mathbb{R}, we have e2x>0e^{2x} > 0 for every xx, so

f(x)=e2x−4>−4,f(x) = e^{2x} - 4 > - 4,

and as x→∞x \rightarrow \infty, f(x)→∞f(x) \rightarrow \infty, while as x→−∞x \rightarrow - \infty, f(x)→−4+f(x) \rightarrow - 4^{\text{+}}. So the range of ff is (−4, ∞)( - 4,\ \infty).

∴\therefore f−1(x)=12ln⁡(x+4)f^{- 1}(x) = \frac{1}{2}\ln(x + 4), with domain x>−4x > - 4.

To check your answer: f(0)=e0−4=−3f(0) = e^{0} - 4 = - 3, and f−1(−3)=12ln⁡(1)=0f^{- 1}( - 3) = \frac{1}{2}\ln(1) = 0. ✓

Approach

fg(x)fg(x) means f(g(x))f\left( g(x) \right), so we substitute g(x)=x+2g(x) = x + 2 into ff before solving.

Since g(x)=x+2g(x) = x + 2,

fg(x)=f(x+2)fg(x) = f(x + 2)
=e2(x+2)−4= e^{2(x + 2)} - 4
=e2x+4−4.= e^{2x + 4} - 4.

Using the given equation fg(x)=5fg(x) = 5,

e2x+4−4=5e^{2x + 4} - 4 = 5
e2x+4=9e^{2x + 4} = 9

Taking ln⁡\ln of both sides,

Since ln⁡9=ln⁡32=2ln⁡3\ln 9 = \ln 3^{2} = 2\ln 3,

2x+4=2ln⁡3.2x + 4 = 2\ln 3.

Solving:

x=ln⁡3−2x = \ln 3 - 2

∴\therefore x=ln⁡3−2x = \ln 3 - 2.
