Since the curve is quadratic and has a minimum point at (1,−2)(1, - 2), we write it in vertex form,

y=a(x−1)2−2,y = a(x - 1)^{2} - 2,

where a>0a > 0 is a constant to be found.

Differentiating,

dydx=2a(x−1).\frac{dy}{dx} = 2a(x - 1).

Using the given gradient at x=2x = 2:

2a(2−1)=52a(2 - 1) = 5
2a=52a = 5
a=52.a = \frac{5}{2}.

Substituting back,

y=52(x−1)2−2y = \frac{5}{2}(x - 1)^{2} - 2
=52x2−5x+12.= \frac{5}{2}x^{2} - 5x + \frac{1}{2}.
To check your answer: at x=1x = 1, y=52(0)2−2=−2y = \frac{5}{2}(0)^{2} - 2 = - 2, the stated minimum; and dydx=5(x−1)\frac{dy}{dx} = 5(x - 1) gives 5(1)=55(1) = 5 at x=2x = 2. ✓

∴\therefore the equation of the curve is y=52x2−5x+12y = \frac{5}{2}x^{2} - 5x + \frac{1}{2} (equivalently y=52(x−1)2−2y = \frac{5}{2}(x - 1)^{2} - 2).

This is how we mark, and how we teach.
