Since the growth rate is proportional to NN,

dNdt=kN\frac{dN}{dt} = kN

Separating variables and integrating,

∫1N dN=∫k dt\int\frac{1}{N}\, dN = \int k\, dt
⇒ln⁡N=kt+c\Rightarrow \ln N = kt + c
⇒N=Aekt, where A=ec\Rightarrow N = Ae^{kt},\ \text{where}\ A = e^{c}

At t=0t = 0, N=100N = 100:

100=Ae0100 = Ae^{0}
⇒A=100\Rightarrow A = 100

At t=2t = 2, N=300N = 300:

300=100e2k300 = 100e^{2k}
⇒e2k=3\Rightarrow e^{2k} = 3
⇒k=12ln⁡3\Rightarrow k = \frac{1}{2}\ln 3

So N=100e12tln⁡3=100×3t/2N = 100e^{\frac{1}{2}t\ln 3} = 100 \times 3^{t/2}.

To find when N=1000N = 1000,

1000=100×3t/21000 = 100 \times 3^{t/2}
⇒3t/2=10\Rightarrow 3^{t/2} = 10
⇒t2ln⁡3=ln⁡10\Rightarrow \frac{t}{2}\ln 3 = \ln 10
⇒t=2ln⁡10ln⁡3\Rightarrow t = \frac{2\ln 10}{\ln 3}
To check your answer: t=2ln⁡10ln⁡3≈4.192t = \frac{2\ln 10}{\ln 3} \approx 4.192 min; at this tt, 100×3t/2=100×32.096≈1000100 \times 3^{t/2} = 100 \times 3^{2.096} \approx 1000 ✓

∴\therefore k=12ln⁡3k = \frac{1}{2}\ln 3, and the number of bacteria reaches 10001000 after t=2ln⁡10ln⁡3≈4.19t = \frac{2\ln 10}{\ln 3} \approx 4.19 minutes.

Now the growth rate is reduced by dd bacteria per minute, so

dNdt=kN−d\frac{dN}{dt} = kN - d

Separating variables and integrating,

∫1kN−d dN=∫dt\int\frac{1}{kN - d}\, dN = \int dt
⇒1kln⁡∣kN−d∣=t+c\Rightarrow \frac{1}{k}\ln|kN - d| = t + c

At t=0t = 0, N=100N = 100:

0=1kln⁡∣100k−d∣+c0 = \frac{1}{k}\ln|100k - d| + c
⇒c=−1kln⁡∣100k−d∣\Rightarrow c = - \frac{1}{k}\ln|100k - d|

Substituting back,

t=1kln⁡∣kN−d∣−1kln⁡∣100k−d∣t = \frac{1}{k}\ln|kN - d| - \frac{1}{k}\ln|100k - d|
=1kln⁡∣kN−d100k−d∣= \frac{1}{k}\ln\left| \frac{kN - d}{100k - d} \right|

Now we make NN the subject.

kt=ln⁡∣kN−d100k−d∣kt = \ln\left| \frac{kN - d}{100k - d} \right|
⇒ekt=kN−d100k−d\Rightarrow e^{kt} = \frac{kN - d}{100k - d}
⇒kN−d=(100k−d)ekt\Rightarrow kN - d = (100k - d)e^{kt}
⇒N=(100−dk)ekt+dk\Rightarrow N = \left( 100 - \frac{d}{k} \right)e^{kt} + \frac{d}{k}
To check your answer: at t=0t = 0, N=(100−dk)(1)+dk=100N = \left( 100 - \frac{d}{k} \right)(1) + \frac{d}{k} = 100 ✓; differentiating gives dNdt=k(100−dk)ekt=kN−d\frac{dN}{dt} = k\left( 100 - \frac{d}{k} \right)e^{kt} = kN - d, matching the original equation ✓

∴\therefore t=1kln⁡∣kN−d100k−d∣t = \frac{1}{k}\ln\left| \frac{kN - d}{100k - d} \right| and N=(100−dk)ekt+dkN = \left( 100 - \frac{d}{k} \right)e^{kt} + \frac{d}{k}, where k=12ln⁡3k = \frac{1}{2}\ln 3.

Part (c)(i)

d>50ln⁡3d > 50\ln 3

Explanation: writing N(t)=(100−dk)ekt+dkN(t) = \left( 100 - \frac{d}{k} \right)e^{kt} + \frac{d}{k}, the coefficient of the growing term ekte^{kt} is 100−dk100 - \frac{d}{k}. If d>100kd > 100k, this coefficient is negative, so dNdt=k(100−dk)ekt\frac{dN}{dt} = k\left( 100 - \frac{d}{k} \right)e^{kt} is negative for every tt, and NN decreases throughout. If d≤100kd \leq 100k, the coefficient is non-negative and NN does not decrease. Since 100k=50ln⁡3100k = 50\ln 3, the number of bacteria decreases if and only if d>50ln⁡3d > 50\ln 3.

∴\therefore the number of bacteria decreases for d>50ln⁡3 (≈54.9)d > 50\ln 3\ ( \approx 54.9).

Part (c)(ii)

Since d=58>50ln⁡3≈54.93d = 58 > 50\ln 3 \approx 54.93, the population does decrease to zero. Setting N=0N = 0 in the formula from part (b),

0=(100−58k)ekt+58k0 = \left( 100 - \frac{58}{k} \right)e^{kt} + \frac{58}{k}
⇒ekt=5858−100k\Rightarrow e^{kt} = \frac{58}{58 - 100k}
⇒t=1kln⁡(5858−100k)\Rightarrow t = \frac{1}{k}\ln\left( \frac{58}{58 - 100k} \right)

Substituting k=12ln⁡3k = \frac{1}{2}\ln 3,

t=2ln⁡3ln⁡(5858−50ln⁡3)t = \frac{2}{\ln 3}\ln\left( \frac{58}{58 - 50\ln 3} \right)
To check your answer: 58−50ln⁡3≈3.06958 - 50\ln 3 \approx 3.069, so 583.069≈18.90\frac{58}{3.069} \approx 18.90 and t≈21.0986ln⁡(18.90)≈5.350t \approx \frac{2}{1.0986}\ln(18.90) \approx 5.350 min; substituting this tt back into N(t)N(t) with d=58d = 58 gives N≈0N \approx 0 ✓

∴\therefore t=2ln⁡3ln⁡(5858−50ln⁡3)≈5.35t = \frac{2}{\ln 3}\ln\left( \frac{58}{58 - 50\ln 3} \right) \approx 5.35 minutes.
