Part (a)

y=14ax−x2y = \frac{1}{\sqrt{4ax - x^{2}}}

For yy to be defined, we need 4ax−x2>04ax - x^{2} > 0, i.e. x(4a−x)>0x(4a - x) > 0, i.e. 0<x<4a0 < x < 4a.

Completing the square:

4ax−x24ax - x^{2}
=−(x2−4ax)= - \left( x^{2} - 4ax \right)
=−[(x−2a)2−4a2]= - \left\lbrack (x - 2a)^{2} - 4a^{2} \right\rbrack
=4a2−(x−2a)2= 4a^{2} - (x - 2a)^{2}

As x→0+x \rightarrow 0^{\text{+}} or x→(4a)−x \rightarrow (4a)^{-}, 4ax−x2→0+4ax - x^{2} \rightarrow 0^{\text{+}}, so y→+∞y \rightarrow + \infty: there are vertical asymptotes at x=0x = 0 and x=4ax = 4a.

Since 4ax−x2=4a2−(x−2a)24ax - x^{2} = 4a^{2} - (x - 2a)^{2} is maximised (equal to 4a24a^{2}) at x=2ax = 2a, the denominator 4ax−x2\sqrt{4ax - x^{2}} is maximised there too, so yy is smallest at x=2ax = 2a:

y=14a2=12ay = \frac{1}{\sqrt{4a^{2}}} = \frac{1}{2a}
Sketch for question 6
To check your answer: taking a=1a = 1, at x=2x = 2 (the midpoint of 0<x<40 < x < 4), y=18−4=12y = \frac{1}{\sqrt{8 - 4}} = \frac{1}{2}, matching 12a=12\frac{1}{2a} = \frac{1}{2}; at x=0.1x = 0.1 or x=3.9x = 3.9, yy is much larger, consistent with the asymptotes at x=0x = 0 and x=4ax = 4a. ✓

∴\therefore vertical asymptotes x=0x = 0 and x=4ax = 4a.

Part (b)

1 mark

From part (a), yy is smallest at x=2ax = 2a.

∴\therefore ymin⁡=12ay_{\min} = \frac{1}{2a}.

Approach

From part (a), CC’s equation is already written in completed-square form, y=14a2−(x−2a)2y = \frac{1}{\sqrt{4a^{2} - (x - 2a)^{2}}}, so we can read the transformation off by comparing this directly with the target equation, without differentiating or solving anything.

Let g(x)=14a2−x2g(x) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{4a^{2} - x^{2}}} be the target curve. From part (a), CC’s equation is y=g(x−2a)y = g(x - 2a).

Since g(x−2a)g(x - 2a) is the graph of gg shifted 2a2a units in the positive xx-direction, CC is gg translated 2a2a units right. Reversing this, gg is obtained from CC by a translation 2a2a units in the negative xx-direction.

To check your answer: CC is defined on 0<x<4a0 < x < 4a with minimum point (2a,12a)\left( 2a,\frac{1}{2a} \right); translating 2a2a units in the negative xx-direction gives domain −2a<x<2a- 2a < x < 2a with minimum point (0,12a)\left( 0,\frac{1}{2a} \right). Directly, y=14a2−x2y = \frac{1}{\sqrt{4a^{2} - x^{2}}} is indeed defined on −2a<x<2a- 2a < x < 2a, with minimum value 14a2=12a\frac{1}{\sqrt{4a^{2}}} = \frac{1}{2a} at x=0x = 0. ✓

∴\therefore a translation of 2a2a units in the negative xx-direction.

This is how we mark, and how we teach.
