Since y=ux2y = ux^{2}, where uu is a function of xx, we differentiate using the product rule:

dydx=x2dudx+2xu.\frac{dy}{dx} = x^{2}\frac{du}{dx} + 2xu.

Substituting y=ux2y = ux^{2} and this expression for dydx\frac{dy}{dx} into xdydx=2y−6x\frac{dy}{dx} = 2y - 6:

x(x2dudx+2xu)=2(ux2)−6x\left( x^{2}\frac{du}{dx} + 2xu \right) = 2\left( ux^{2} \right) - 6
x3dudx+2x2u=2x2u−6x^{3}\frac{du}{dx} + 2x^{2}u = 2x^{2}u - 6
x3dudx=−6x^{3}\frac{du}{dx} = - 6
dudx=−6x3  (shown)\frac{du}{dx} = - \frac{6}{x^{3}}\ \ \left( \text{shown} \right)

∴f(x)=−6x3\therefore f(x) = - \frac{6}{x^{3}}.

Approach

Having reduced the equation to dudx=f(x)\frac{du}{dx} = f(x) in (i), we integrate directly to find uu, then convert back to yy using y=ux2y = ux^{2} and apply the given condition.

Integrating dudx=−6x−3\frac{du}{dx} = - 6x^{- 3} with respect to xx:

u=∫−6x−3 dxu = \int - 6x^{- 3}\, dx
=3x−2+C= 3x^{- 2} + C
=3x2+C,= \frac{3}{x^{2}} + C,

where CC is an arbitrary constant. Since y=ux2y = ux^{2},

y=(3x2+C)x2y = \left( \frac{3}{x^{2}} + C \right)x^{2}
=3+Cx2.= 3 + Cx^{2}.

Using the given condition y=2y = 2 when x=1x = 1:

2=3+C2 = 3 + C
C=−1C = - 1

∴y=3−x2\therefore y = 3 - x^{2}.

To check your answer: with y=3−x2y = 3 - x^{2}, dydx=−2x\frac{dy}{dx} = - 2x, so xdydx=−2x2x\frac{dy}{dx} = - 2x^{2}, and 2y−6=2(3−x2)−6=−2x22y - 6 = 2\left( 3 - x^{2} \right) - 6 = - 2x^{2}. The two sides agree, and y(1)=3−1=2y(1) = 3 - 1 = 2 matches the given condition. ✓
